Bauhaus: Art as Life // 23.5.2012

I finally got round to visiting the Bauhaus exhibition at the Barbican in London on Wednesday, I came away feeling very inspired! Originally, I was going to use the visit to gather ideas for prints but I've already developed my collagraph plate. Instead, I focused on the graphic design to give me inspiration for my exhibition mount boards.  I was surprised by the rough, put together feel of the photo montages and collages. The images I had seen in books and on the internet gave me the impression that everything would be immaculate but there were lots of contrasting materials and lots of the work retained their handmade feel despite looking highly contemporary with vivid colour schemes and bold serif fonts.

type written labels // large printed font

sequence contact strip // portrait photographs

magazine cuttings // collaged pattern paper

Below are some examples of work by Bauhaus students I noted down while I was at the exhibition:

After seeing photo collages at the exhibition, I would like to create a similar effect using photographs taken in the studio instead of magazine cuttings.  I could edit them on Photoshop to create a sepia tone too.
